Diaconal Church Initiatives and Social/Public Welfare in Postwar Japan: A Descriptive Overview

This article reflects on post-WWII developments and the current state of church-related diaconal initiatives in Japan. Pioneering Christians have made significant contributions to development social welfare since Meiji Era (1868–1912). Despite still being a radical minority around only 1 percent Japan’s population, nationwide network Japanese Christian churches, educational institutions, organizations makes Christianity’s presence felt much wider scale. With its focus postwar efforts, this gives brief overview that ranges from education reform medical care, all which were traditionally incorporated under notion “Christian Social Welfare” (Kirisutokyō Shakai Fukushi). The research integrates English sources methodical, rigorous literature study response following main question: Why is there complicated relationship Japan between church practices defined as diakonia work Christian-based organizations? discovers how theological concept re-orientating core identity mission churches A case Reformed Church activities presented highlight conclusion complex remains enacted rubric diakonia.
